When does a pilgrimage begin?

When exactly, we wondered, does a pilgrimage begin? Is it at the airport - in which case, which one? Heathrow (very early this morning, for 30 of our party; later in the day for those arriving by El Al) or Tel Aviv? When we started packing?

Or is it tonight, when travel weary, we settle in at our hotels on the shores of Lake Galilee? Tomorrow morning, when our programme begins? At lunchtime, which will be the first opportunity the whole diocesan party has to gather?

Or perhaps our journey began when we first read about the pilgrimage and decided to come to the Holy Land. Our hope is certainly that the experience of the next few days will live on in our lives much longer than the time we are actually in Israel.
